After more than 30 years of certifying (12 certifications and 30 exams) and helping other certify with training and books, I think it’s time to close this chapter. Call me certifiable…

Microsoft re-awarded me as a FastTrack Recognized Solution Architect – Power BI for 2022! This prestigious recognition is conferred by the Power Platform product engineering team for consistently exhibiting deep architecture expertise and creating high quality solutions for customers during project engagements. I’m one of the 36 individuals worldwide who met the following criteria:

Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience with Power BI and a minimum of 5 years of experience with Enterprise BI solutions
Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience as an Enterprise BI architect
Must be working for a partner with Gold certification in Data Analytics MPN competency
Must have been lead architect for at least 2 Power BI in-production implementations with at least 200 active users (Preferably for CAT managed customers)

Azure Data Engineer Badge Acquired

Just passed the Microsoft DP-203 exam and added yet another badge to my certification portfolio. This certification is one of the requirements for partners to maintain Microsoft Gold Data Analytics Competency, so I’m glad to take this off my list.

Applied Power BI Book (7th Edition)

Happy New Year!

I’m excited to announce the availability of the seventh edition of my Applied Microsoft Power BI book! When the first edition was published in January 2016, it was the first Power BI book at that time and it had less than 300 pages. Since then, I helped many companies adopt or transition to Power BI and taught hundreds of students. It’s been a great experience to witness the momentum surrounding Power BI and how the tool has matured over time. As a result, the book also got thicker and doubled in size. However, I believe what’s more important is that this book provides systematic, yet dependent, view by showing what Power BI can do for four types of users (business users, analysts, pros, and developers).

For the first time, the book features a Kindle PDF (Amazon Print Replica) ebook version which replaces the Kindle native “reflow” format previously used. Now if you buy the ebook, you will read it on your Kindle device or phone exactly as it was formatted to print the paperback! The ebook is also enrolled in Kindle Unlimited – an Amazon subscription program where you can read as many eBooks as you like and keep them as long as you want.

To my understanding, this is the only Power BI book that is revised annually to keep it up to date with this ever changing technology! Hint: you can tell how old Power BI is from the book’s edition number.

Because I had to draw a line somewhere, Applied Microsoft Power BI (7th edition) covers all features that are in preview or released by December 2021. Microsoft awarded me FastTrack Recognized Solution Architect – Power BI! I’m one of the 33 individuals worldwide who must meet the following criteria:

“Applied DAX with Power BI” Book Available

I’m excited to announce my latest book: “Applied DAX with Power BI: From zero to hero with 15-minute lessons“. This book was born out of necessity. In my consulting practice, I had been teaching and implementing Power BI and Analysis Services Tabular, and people were constantly asking for DAX book recommendations. Indeed, DAX is not an easy topic and has its ways to humble even experienced practitioners. There are a few good reference books out there, but they could be somewhat overwhelming for novice users. So, I turned my classroom and consulting experience into this book and designed it as a self-paced guide to help you learn DAX one lesson at a time.

This one was a different book to write. Unlike my other books, which tend to be heavy, this book is smaller (220 pages). Regardless, it took me a while to write it. The book also adopts a lesson-based approach, so the reader can learn and practice a specific DAX concept quickly. There are usually three sections in each lesson: Practice (with step-by-step guidance), Outcome (a visual that shows the result), and Analysis (explaining why it works this way). Most lessons are five to six pages long, and it should take no more than 15 minutes to complete the lesson’s exercises (you can download and view a sample lesson from the book page).

And if you do one lesson per day, you’ll be a DAX expert in a month!

Currently, the book is available on Amazon (paperback and Kindle eBook) and it’s making its way to other outlets. As always, I’m awaiting feedback on the discussion forum at the bottom of the book page.
